Melvin Kirt Weimer

Obituary

Class of 1963
April 8, 1944 – March 12, 2023
Melvin Kirt Weimer
Melvin Kirt Weimer, 78, was born April 8, 1944, in Pocatello, Idaho to Helen Pugmire Weimer and Forrest “Rusty” Weimer. Kirt entered the arms of his loving heavenly Father on March 12, 2023, with his wife at his side.
Kirt attended elementary school in Pocatello and Pine, Idaho where he attended school a one-room schoolhouse with memories of drinking water from the mountain stream running through the school yard and hot chocolate the teacher would make each winter morning on the wood stove. Later his family moved to Weiser where he attended junior high and high school, graduating in 1963. While attending Weiser High School, Kirt participated in various sports, but he most often reminisced about his days of playing football and his love of diving on the swim team where he was a state champion diver in 1962 and 1963. Kirt was later asked to manage the Weiser City pool, a request he took great pride in receiving. Living on the Snake River in Weiser he would tell of the many adventures he and Roger Eisenbarth, and other lifelong friends, made swimming, fishing, hunting, skipping rocks, and many other crazy mischievous teenage boy antics.
In 1964, Kirt enlisted in the United States Navy. He attended basic training in San Diego, California and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia before deploying to Vietnam twice. Kirt proudly served his country on the USS Furse and the USS Eaton, both destroyer ships. Years later, the friendships he formed remained intact and he always looked forward to his weekly calls with James Feraca.
After returning to the states, Kirt was anxious to return to Idaho where he could pursue his love of hunting, fishing, and spending time in the mountains. In July of 1969 he met his future wife, Edie Moon, marrying March 27, 1970. Kirt started his career as a journeyman lineman and lineman at Dry Lake Electric where he worked for several years. Later, he accepted a position with Idaho Power where he worked for 40 years before retiring in 2008. For most of his career, Kirt was a troubleman in Homedale, Idaho. He loved the small town and the many amazing people that made Homedale a wonderful community to raise his two sons in.
Kirt had great interest in local education and served on the Homedale School Board for several years.  Some of the projects he was most proud of was the elementary school remodel, building of the middle school, and a remodel of the existing high school.  He was an active member of the PTA and volunteered his skills each year at the annual smorgasbord. With many other supporters, they helped start a Fan Club providing support to each of the athletic divisions of the school, including building tennis courts and the first girls’ softball field. Kirt cherished the football team and proudly contributed to the team by voluntarily changing football field lights for Homedale and the surrounding communities for years. Kirt was also a member of the Mt. View Nazarene Church.
Kirt loved hunting, fishing, camping, and playing golf. After retiring, he stumbled across a new hobby giving him much pleasure – making walking sticks from unique wood that he would give to special friends and family. Most of all though, he loved anything he could do with his two children and two grandsons. He cherished spending time with Kaden and Karsen, who were the most important part of life. He was often caught bragging to anyone that would listen just how proud he was of his grandsons.
Kirt is survived by his wife Edie, son Michael (Patricia), son Mickey (Gabriel), grandsons Kaden and Karsen, sister Beverly Elliott (Dwayne), sister Peggy Crockett (David), two nephews and two nieces, and numerous cousins. Kirt was proceeded by death by his parents Rusty and Helen Weimer, and in-laws Carroll and Dorothy Moon.
A military honor graveside service is scheduled for April 10, 2023, at the Idaho Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 P.M.  Guests are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to line up for the procession. A celebration of life will be held at Eagle Nazarene Church, 1001 W State St, Eagle, ID immediately following the service.
